Bristol, Rhode Island is a small town in a tiny state but it has one big tradition. Bristol boasts of having the “nation’s oldest continuous 4th of July celebration”, going back to July 1777 on the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A British officer reported hearing the firing of thirteen canons in the morning and another round of thirteen at sunset. The parade has been an annual event since 1785 and today draws over 200,000 people, causing the town’s population to swell to nearly 10 times it’s normal size.
